A 34-year-old Virginia woman, who went missing last week while hiking in Glacier National Park in Montana, was found dead Sunday.

National Park Service (NPS) officials confirmed that the body of Jennifer Coleman was located in a steep and rocky area near the Continental Divide.

"Rescuers will extract Coleman’s body when weather conditions permit. Air operations were halted today... due to high winds in the incident area," NPS officials said.

The woman's family has been notified and the cause of death remains under investigation, officials said, CBS-affiliated WTVR reported.

"It is with a heavy heart that we have to share this news. Jennifer Coleman, daughter of one of our own AWARE family, Hal and Sharon Coleman, has been located deceased. Please respect the family as they process their grief & loss," the AWARE Foundation, a non-profit that helps rescue/find missing people, said in a Facebook post.

Coleman's last contact was a text message to a pet care facility on Aug. 30 around 11.57 a.m. "She was to pick up her dogs from a boarding facility the following day, but never showed to get them. A welfare check was done at her campsite by the local sheriff’s office, where they discovered her belongings at the site," the post read.

Officials believe Coleman went hiking around the Logan Pass on Aug. 30 or 31. Her car was discovered at the Logan Pass parking lot Wednesday afternoon.

A search was started immediately. As many as 50 rescue personnel joined the search that continued till Sunday.

The death has come as a shocker for her family. They say she was "tough as nails" and was "an experienced hiker."

Coleman's cousin, Will Coleman, told CBS 6 he was "lost for words." "I was just shocked and worried," Coleman said. "She's very intelligent. She's very smart. You know, she's grown up on a farm her entire life. So, I know she has survival instincts."

The remains of a 28-year-old Washington hiker, who went missing in the North Cascade mountain range two years ago, were recovered recently by search and rescue personnel. Rachel Lakoduk of Moses Lake, who disappeared on Oct. 17, 2019, while hiking to the Hidden Lake Trail to celebrate her birthday, never made it to the lookout cabin on the trail. Her bones and backpack were recovered by the search team in August.
