KEY POINTS

  • The Panthers were at the top of the 49ers' list of trade partners for Jimmy Garoppolo
  • The Panthers continue to struggle with Baker Mayfield calling the plays
  • Mayfield may get benched once Sam Darnold recovers from his injury

Jimmy Garoppolo will play out the current NFL season with the San Francisco 49ers despite the growing belief that he would be traded in the offseason.

Although nothing came to fruition, the two-time Super Bowl champion revealed the NFL team that also secured his services.

Speaking to reporters after the Niners' Week 5 match against the Carolina Panthers, Garoppolo narrated how he was close to moving to their opponents in the summer via NFL.com.

"I think we were advancing [in talks] with a couple of different teams," Garoppolo said. "Nothing obviously came to fruition. [The Panthers] were top of the list, I would say, one of the top couple. [But] I'm glad things worked out. I'm here, so I'm focused on this stuff now."

The Panthers ended up taking in Baker Mayfield in a deal involving the Cleveland Browns instead.

Before that, Carolina had also secured the services of Sam Darnold to man their quarterback positions.

As for Garoppolo, he ended up settling for a revised deal to stay in San Francisco.

He was initially seen to be a backup, an insurance policy for the 49ers for the 2022-23 NFL season behind Trey Lance.

In the end, the move proved crucial after Lance went down with a season-ending ankle injury.

Garoppolo would reclaim the starting quarterback job at a lower salary.

So far, the 49ers are 2-2 in the NFC West–including a recent win over the reigning Super Bowl champion Los Angeles Rams.

As for the Panthers, Mayfield has not exactly performed according to expectations as he has been struggling and word is going around that he could eventually be benched.

So far, that has yet to happen with pundits feeling the Panthers will eventually try and go with Darnold.

Moreover, critics believe the only reason why Panthers coach Matt Rhule has not made the switch is that Darnold has yet to fully recover from a preseason injury.

In an update several days ago, Darnold is reportedly nowhere close to returning to NFL action.

Although he is eligible to come off the injured reserve, the 25-year-old play-caller continues to nurse his high-ankle sprain, which many experts claimed that it would a while to heal.
