Prince William did Kate Middleton a huge favor before they got engaged. The Duke of Cambridge didn’t rush into proposing to the Duchess of Cambridge because he wanted to give her time to rethink her decision.

During their first joint interview as an engaged couple, the dad of three said that he wanted Middleton to back out from their relationship if she felt that she wasn’t ready to be part of the royal family. Prince William also wanted to make sure that the mom of three’s family would be on board.

“Her and her family – I really want to make sure they have the best guidance to see what life has been like or what it is like in ‘the family.’ That’s kind of almost why I waited so long. I wanted to give her a chance to see and to back out if she needed to before it all got too much,” Prince William said.

The second in line to the throne also said that he was very protective of Middleton that’s why he didn’t force her to be with him. But unlike Princess Diana, the mom of three was already mature enough when she and Prince William tied the knot.

Prince William also said that he and Middleton talked about their future several times during their decade-long relationship. But at the end of the day, the decision on how and when to propose was entirely up to him. At this point, Prince George’s dad joked that since he’s a romantic, he was able to plan a great proposal for Middleton.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge dated while they were still studying at the University of St. Andrews. The couple split twice during their decade-long relationship. Three years after their second split, Prince William proposed to Middleton while they were on vacation. One year later, the couple wed at Westminster Abbey.
