Kim Petras became the first transgender woman to win a Grammy and the 30-year-old singer took the opportunity during her acceptance speech to thank people who impacted her life, including Madonna.

Petras and Sam Smith won an award for their music track, "Unholy" in the Best Pop Duo/Group Performance category.

The singer first thanked Smith, who asked her to give the acceptance speech because she is the first transgender woman to win this award.

"Sam graciously wanted me to accept this award because I'm the first transgender woman to win this award," the singer said. "I just want to thank all the incredible transgender legends before me who kicked these doors for me so I can be here tonight."

She also went on to pay a tribute to a friend who died in January 2021 after an accidental fall from a building's rooftop. Petras said, "Sophie, especially, my friend who passed away two years ago, who told me this would happen and always believed in me."

Petras went on to thank Madonna for "fighting for LGBTQ rights," adding that "I don't think I could be here without Madonna." She recalled growing up "next to a highway in Germany" and thanked her mother for supporting her and believing that she was a girl.

"My mother. I grew up next to a highway in Germany, and my mother believed me that I was a girl, and I wouldn't be here without her and her support," she concluded.

The singer was assigned the male gender at birth, however, at the age of 16, Petras went under sex reassignment surgery and transitioned in November 2008.

As far as her music career is concerned, Petras dropped a series of singles like "Fade Away," "Boomerang," "Die for You" and "Last Forever" between 2008 and 2009. She dropped "Unholy" in collaboration with Smith on Sept. 20, last year.
