KEY POINTS

  • Liverpool defeated Newcastle 3-1 Thursday
  • Salah, Jota and Alexander-Arnold scored for Liverpool
  • Alexander-Arnold scored a screamer from 25 yards away

Jurgen Klopp called Trent Alexander-Arnold's shooting technique a "different level" game after the right-back scored a screamer in Liverpool FC's record win in the Premier League on Thursday.

Just seven minutes into the first half, midfielder Jonjo Shelvey scored against his former club to put Newcastle United 1-0 up. Diogo Jota negated the visitors' lead with his 21st-minute strike. In-form Mohamed Salah doubled Liverpool's scoreline by scoring four minutes later.

Alexander-Arnold struck a late goal in the second half from 25 yards to make it 3-1 for Liverpool, who sealed their 2,000th top-flight win, becoming the first-ever English team to achieve the prestigious record. The three goals also meant, Liverpool have now scored in each of their last 32 games in all competitions, the longest ever scoring run in their history, according to Opta Joe.

It was Alexander-Arnold's second goal of the 2021-22 season, while he has provided 10 assists as well across all competitions.

"I thought it was the best long ball we played today! Absolutely crazy goal. His shooting technique is really different level and really cool to watch. In a situation like that, having the positivity and optimism to do it is, again, the basis for these kinds of goals. So, well done," Klopp said in a post-match interview Thursday, Liverpool's official website reported.

Meanwhile, 23-year-old Alexander-Arnold said he waited for five years to finally score a goal as "clean" as the latest one.

"I've been waiting for that for five years now, waiting to hit it clean like that. I've had a few from the edge of the box and I've dragged them and things like that. I've caught that one sweet and it's nestled in the top corner. It was a clean strike and obviously kind of put the game to bed," the right-back told Liverpool's media.

After 17 matches in the 2021-22 Premier League season, Liverpool are placed second with 40 points, one behind leaders Manchester City. Their title rivals Chelsea were held at a 1-1 draw and as a result, Thomas Tuchel's side has fallen behind in the title race. The Blues are four points behind City.
