King Philip needs the Templars help in this week’s episode of “Knightfall.”

According to the synopsis for Season 1, episode 5 of the History series, tensions are high during Princess Isabella’s (Sabrina Bartlett) wedding preparations. Fearing an attack, King Philip (Ed Stoppard) asks Landry (Tom Cullen) and his fellow Templars to protect the palace.

While the synopsis doesn’t specify the incoming threat, last episode’s final scene suggests that France is expecting an attack from England. At the end of Season 1, episode 4, the King of England returned Sebastian to France. But instead of sending back Sebastian alive, the King of England returned Princess Isabella’s favorite stallion dead. When De Nogaret’s (Julian Ovenden) assistant Nicholas (Edward Bourne) asked why the King of England returned the horse dead, King Philip said, “It means war.”

King Philip sent Sebastian to the King of England and to his son Prince Edward as a gift after the royal family of France chose Prince Lluis of Catalonia (Marcos Franz) over Prince Edward to be Princess Isabella’s husband. “[It’s] a symbol of our respect for England and of our hope for lasting peace between us,” King Philip told English ambassador Robert (Oliver Maltman) in Season 1, episode 3.

While Robert found the gift wonderful, he said that his King was expecting news of a wedding. “When he hears what has happened no amount of stallions will placate him,” Robert told King Philip. “I know I speak for King when I say unless you keep your promise and return the hand of your daughter to Prince Edward you will have war.”

In the trailer for episode 5, Landry and Gawain (Pádraic Delaney) seem to be brainstorming ideas on how they could protect the palace and the church from the potential attack from England.

“[We should use] Greek fire,” Gawain suggests. But Landry doesn’t think it’s a good idea. “It could destroy the whole church,” he explains.

Realizing the danger of continuing the wedding, Landry tells King Philip to postpone the ceremony. But it appears that the King doesn’t listen and still pushes the wedding through.

During the actual ceremony, a masked assassin breaks into the church and fires his crossbow at King Philip. Landry is able to warn King Philip but it remains to be seen if the King manages to dodge the attack.

“Knightfall” Season 1, episode 5, titled “Hard Blows Will Banish the Sin,” airs on Wednesday, Jan. 3 at 10 p.m. EST on History. Watch the trailer below:
