  • Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Barker's lavish wedding ceremony in Portofino, Italy, Sunday sparked backlash
  • Kardashian wore a dramatic veil that featured the image of the Virgin Mary
  • Some social media users accused them of disrespecting the Catholic religion

Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Barker's wedding in Italy has sparked backlash online, with the couple being accused of "mocking" Catholicism.

The Poosh founder and the Blink-182 drummer tied the knot for the third time in an intimate wedding ceremony in Portofino, Italy, Sunday.

Kardashian walked down the aisle wearing a white Dolce & Gabbana mini dress and a dramatic veil that featured the image of the Virgin Mary — a nod to one of her husband's tattoos, Page Six reported.

It is unclear whether Kardashian, 43, is a member of the Catholic church, though the reality star has shared plenty of Bible passages via her Instagram Stories over the years. Barker, on the other hand, previously told Vice that he was raised as a Catholic and that he "definitely prays" and "believes in God."

The couple's nuptials raised some eyebrows, with Kardashian's veil being one of the targets of criticism.

"I shouldn’t care, but I just really feel like Travis and Kourtney's wedding is mocking the Catholic religion? They don’t symbolize religious people at all. [It] just feels like mockery. I’m not Catholic, but [it] just doesn’t sit right with me," one person tweeted.

"Kinda weird that Kourtney's wedding is like this Catholic 'aesthetic' like the Virgin Mary on her dress and her wedding veil??" another user added.

Kardashian's tulle headpiece was hand-embroidered. Aside from the depiction of the Virgin Mary, it also featured the words "family," "loyalty" and "respect," which are also inked on Barker's body.

The black sleeveless Dolce & Gabbana mini dress that the reality star wore ahead of her Sunday wedding also received criticism.

The dress featured a fitted bodice, a snap-up split in the front and a Virgin Mary emblem. The "Kardashians" star paired it with simple black sandals, long black gloves and a black veil featuring a blue lace at the bottom. The dress was similar to one her sister Kim Kardashian wore in 2017, according to People.

"Am I the only one that thinks this is totally inappropriate and disrespectful? Really @kourtneykardash? The Virgin Mary?" one tweeted alongside a photo of Kardashian posing in the dress.

"It is ugly! But the disrespect is mindblowing to me!" another user commented.

However, other social media users pointed out that celebrities wearing ensembles with religious images and themes is not new. Some even suggested that it may have something to do with Kardashian and Barker's wish to have a child together.

"Madonna did this years ago. Then Lady Gaga. Nothing's shocking anymore," one wrote.

"I feel like they’re announcing a 'miracle' pregnancy, and they’ll name the kid something weirder than Saint but along the same lines," another user speculated.

The couple has been open about their "difficult" IVF journey, which they started last summer and documented on the Hulu series "The Kardashians."

"It's been an emotional rollercoaster. They never expected it to be as hard as it's been," one unnamed insider told People last month. "It's been especially difficult for Kourtney. They still would love to have a baby. Travis is not putting any pressure on Kourtney though. He just wants her to be happy and healthy."

Kardashian shares Mason, 11, Penelope, 9, and Reign, 6, with ex Scott Disick. Barker also has two children, son Landon, 18, and daughter Alabama, 16, with his ex-wife Shanna Moakler.
