KEY POINTS

  • Multiple players out against Tottenham
  • Pulisic still out for Blues
  • Lampard faces tall odds against Spurs

Chelsea is trying its best to stay competitive but the injury to key players is taking its toll. After bowing to Manchester United recently, 2-0, manager Frank Lampard gave an update on the status of key players. In all, it is not looking good with the Blues possibly without some important players this weekend.

One player that is out against the Tottenham Spurs on Saturday is Christian Pulisic. As mentioned in a previous post, the Blues do not have plans of forcing the issue and prefer that the 21-year-old midfielder returns at 100 percent health. And while most felt he would make his return against United, it appears Pulisic will continue to ride the sidelines.

Aside from Pulisic, other players that will miss the game against Tottenham include Callum Hudson-Odoi and N'Golo Kante. Per Lampard, Kante is dealing with an adductor injury and they will need to assess it first. But this early, things are not looking good since it is the same leg he injured before. Andreas Christensen is likewise questionable after breaking his nose against United.

“Callum, no. Pulisic, no. N’Golo, no, from that today. Tammy is a maybe. It is not going our way with injuries at the moment but the players who come in they have to show that. That is what the squad is there for. It is frustrating,” Lampard said to Chelsea TV.

With odds stacked against Chelsea, things are not looking good heading into Saturday. They are one point ahead of the Spurs. Lampard will have to find a way to hold off Tottenham. Chelsea has proven that it can be in the thick of things, dominating matches when they want to. The problem surfaces when the Blues try to put their opponent away, raising the importance of having key players in matches.

There is no doubt that this has contributed to the frustrations of Lampard. They were unable to make any key signings during the last transfer window, leading him to say that the Blues are underdogs right now. But with the spate of injuries plaguing his team, things could be getting worse.

Expect Lampard to continue to find ways. Bayern Munich is coming up as the first leg of the UEFA Champions League last 16 tie happening next week. All the 41-year-old coach can do right now is pray that some of the players heal up and aid them in their next matches.
