  • The breakup news comes as Buckingham has announced his new album

Former Fleetwood Mac guitarist-singer Lindsey Buckingham and his wife Kristen Messner have decided to split after 21 years of marriage, reports say.

According to a TMZ report Tuesday, the 71-year-old singer's wife filed legal documents in L.A. County to dissolve their marriage of more than two decades. The reason for the split is not known yet.

This is not the first time Buckingham is going through a public split. He dated singer Stevie Nicks for almost three years and then broke up in 1977.

Buckingham shares three children -- Leelee, 21, Stella, 17, and William Gregory, 22, -- with Messner. Since two out of three children are already adults, there might be no custody issues, said the report.

Messner, 51, met the singer in 1990s. They had their first child in 1998 and then reportedly got married in 2000.

News about the couple’s breakup came on the same day when Buckingham announced a self-titled album, "Lindsey Buckingham." It is scheduled to be released on September 17. He shared the news on Twitter.

"My new self-titled album is one I’ve been intending to get out for a couple of years now, but on more than one occasion, unforeseen circumstances necessitated a postponement of plans," he captioned the new music album cover. "Now that we’re back in gear, I’m thrilled to finally be sharing new music with my listeners!"

The singer revealed the first single's title and also announced his solo tour in the same tweet thread.

"I Don’t Mind, the first single off the new self-titled album, out 9/17, is available now. Listen and pre-order here: https://Rhino.lnk.to/LB2021." he wrote. "Tickets for the 2021 solo tour are on sale this Friday from 10 am local at http://LindseyBuckingham.com."

He also mentioned dates and locations where he will be performing.

In a decade-old interview, Buckingham told Las Vegas Review-Journal that he waited "a long time" for love. "I had a lot of crazy girlfriends, and a lot of that was just an outgrowth of the lifestyle we were all leading,” Buckingham said at that time.

"I did see a lot of friends who were parents and spouses — back in previous decades — who weren’t really there and kind of screwed up their kids, and were not there for their family situations," he added.

Buckingham’s released his last 18th studio album titled, "Lindsey Buckingham Christine McVie" in 2017, while his last single was "Holiday Road," which released in 2015.
