A gunman entered a Stop & Shop supermarket Tuesday in Long Island, New York, and opened fire in the manager's office, killing one and wounding two others, according to police.

The suspect, identified as 31-year-old Gabriel Dewitt Wilson, is in Nassau County Police custody after a four-hour manhunt.

Police said Wilson went into the office and shot a male and female employee and then later shot and killed a 49-year-old manager before fleeing the store in West Hempstead, New York.

Both of the surviving victims were taken to a nearby hospital. One of the surviving victims was shot in the chest. The other surviving victim was shot in the shoulder.

Wilson's reported position at the store was collecting carts. Police have not disclosed a possible motive.

Area schools were placed on lockdown during the manhunt. No customer was killed or injured in the shooting.

“They told us to just run and get out, and that’s what we did,” shopper Laura Catanese told News 12 Long Island.

This is the second grocery store shooting and comes just a month after the Boulder, Colorado, shooting that killed 10 people. There have been at least six large-scale shootings in the U.S. in 2021.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo released a statement about the shooting.
