A Massachusetts man was arrested after he attempted to enter Cohasset Police Station with a chainsaw and later locked himself inside his residence with two young children.

The incident occurred at around 2:30 p.m. local time Sunday when the suspect, whose identity has not been revealed, arrived at the Cohasset Police Station in Norfolk County armed with a chainsaw and damaged the lobby when he was unable to cut through the security door. Cohasset police Chief William Quigley revealed the man was known to the department, WHDH reported.

The civilian desk attendant then locked herself in a nearby office and pressed the panic button to alert the officers, which prompted the suspect to flee the scene. Cops responded swiftly and followed him to his residence on Cushing Road, approximately a half-mile from the police station.

Upon reaching his home, cops found the man had barricaded himself with two children under the age of five. The man was reportedly seen coming to a window above his two-car garage and throwing things at the police multiple times. Amid this, a negotiator was asking him to release the children and surrender to the police.

"He was agitated with the officers and when he went to that window, that gave us the opportunity — we knew he was away from the kids — to take him into custody," Quigley said, as per WCVB.

At about 3:40 p.m., police issued a shelter-in-place order for those living within a quarter mile of Norfolk Road and Cushing Road.

A SWAT team was able to enter the house while cops on the ground negotiated with the suspect. They safely removed the children and arrested the man.

Quigley revealed the suspect resisted arrest and had to be tasted by one of the SWAT officers. "He did resist arrest and was tased by one of our SWAT officers," Quigley said.

The two children inside the house, a boy and a girl, were safely placed with their mother. It was unclear how the suspect was related to the children.

The suspect was transported to a hospital in Weymouth for a mental health evaluation, cops added.

"The situation on Cushing Road was resolved peacefully, and one adult male suspect is in custody," Police said in an update on Facebook. The shelter-in-place order was lifted at about 9:00 p.m., after about six hours of a standoff between the police and the suspect.

The motive behind the suspect's act remains under investigation.
