A man was arrested Sunday after the body of his girlfriend, stuffed in a suitcase, was fished out of a drain in Hyderabad, the capital city of southern India's states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

The 25-year-old woman’s family last saw her March 4 when they went to drop her at the airport. She was set to fly to Oman with her boyfriend, Sunil, for a job interview. However, when they were unable to contact her for three days, the family filed a police complaint March 7.

According to the police, Sunil told the girl’s family in February that he was ready to marry her. He told them he wanted to take her to Oman with him as he had got a job there and that he had arranged a job interview for her as well. On March 4, after the girl’s parents dropped her at the airport, Sunil told her that their flight was canceled and they would take the next day's flight. They then checked into a nearby hotel, local daily the Times Of India reported.

After checking in, an argument broke out between the two after the woman, who was not identified, raised the topic of marriage. Sunil reportedly told her that he wanted to end the relationship after going to Oman. However, when the woman warned him against it and accused him of sexually assaulting her, he killed her.

Police said Sunil strangled her to death, then stuffed her body in a suitcase and traveled across the city before dumping it in a drain. He then sent a message from his girlfriend’s phone to her family saying they had reached Oman, before switching off the phone.

After the body was found Saturday, police suspected Sunil’s role and took him into custody.

“During investigation, he confessed to the crime. The body was sent for autopsy and handed over to the family,” a police officer said. Sunil was charged with kidnapping and murder, the News Minute reported.

In a similar incident in October, a 20-year-old woman’s body was found stuffed in a suitcase in Indian state of Maharasthra. Investigation revealed the woman met Muzammil Sayyed, 20, through an online application and went to meet him at his home. The man demanded sex and when she refused, he hit her on the head with a stool, and then strangled her to death before stuffing her body in a suitcase and dumping it in a forest, Deccan Chronicle reported.
