In a shocking incident, a man killed his mother after she refused to give him money for buying alcohol. The incident took place in the Indian state of Odisha on Sunday night.

Police said 32-year-old Prakash Pradhan had gone to attend a wedding reception along with his mother, 55-year-old Savitri Behera, on Sunday evening. The two had a heated argument on the way back home when Behera refused to give her son money to buy alcohol. The argument intensified at home and in a fit of rage, Pradhan killed his mother by striking her neck with an axe before fleeing from the scene.

The neighbors rushed the victim to a nearby hospital where she succumbed to injuries during treatment. Meanwhile, police arrived at the home and seized the blood-stained weapon used in the murder. The victim’s body was handed over to her family following an autopsy Monday.

Police said the accused was on the run and a case of murder was registered.

“A case has been registered in this connection and. Search operation is on to nab the accused,” police said.

The incident comes days after a 25-year-old man from New Delhi stabbed his mother to death after she refused to give him money to buy alcohol. The accused, identified as Deepak, showed up at the police station and confessed to killing his mother in a fit of rage during an argument. He took the officers to his home where the woman was found lying on the bed with her throat slit.

“We arrested Deepak. The knife used in the crime, bed sheet, and pillow, all soaked in blood were seized from the crime scene. These key evidences, along with Deepak’s bloodied clothes have been sent to forensics lab for examination. Deepak has been booked for murder and a case of murder has been registered at the Model Town police station,” police said, adding, “He initially thought of fleeing the city. But then he changed his mind and confessed to his crime.”
