A woman killed herself by hanging after she was gifted a cheap mobile phone by her husband. The incident took place in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh on Thursday.

Police said the woman, identified as 22-year-old Puja, wanted to buy an expensive phone, however, her husband gifted her a cheaper phone following which an argument ensued between the couple Wednesday night. Following the disagreement, the husband slept in the living room while his wife slept in the bedroom with their toddler daughter.

A few hours later, the man heard their daughter crying and tried opening the bedroom door that was locked from inside. When nobody responded, he peeped through the ventilator and saw wife hanging. He broke open the door and rushed Puja to a nearby hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Police searched the home and found no suicide note. Officials said the argument about the phone was probably the reason behind Puja's suicide. The couple was married for three years and Puja's parents were informed about it. The investigation was ongoing and police said they will record her parents' statements.
