A Victoria, Canada, man stabbed his daughters multiple times, killing them, before attempting to kill self at his home in December 2017, a court heard Tuesday.

The prosecutor told the court that the mother of the girls showed up at the police station Dec. 25, 2017, stating her estranged husband, Andrew Robert Douglas Berry, had not returned their daughters to her and that she was unable to contact him. Police reached the man’s home and knocked on the door several times but received no answer. The police managed to enter the home with the help of the property manager. There was no power in the apartment and the responding officers had to use flashlights.

The officers then noticed blood on the walls and discovered the body of a child lying in a pool of blood in the bedroom. They then went on to find a naked man in the bathtub and found the body of another child in another bedroom. The man was identified as Berry, who was in a critical condition with stab wounds in his chest area.

Autopsies revealed that Chloe, Berry’s six-year-old daughter had been struck hard in the head and had 26 stab wounds in her chest, back, arms and wrists. Aubrey, Berry’s four-year-old daughter, was stabbed 32 times, the Vancouver Sun reported.

The prosecutor told court Tuesday that Berry was rushed to the hospital but did not ask about his daughters even once.

“What he did speak about was a series of complaints he had, about his parents, about his former partner, Sarah Cotton, and about the way they had treated him,” the prosecutor said.

Court documents showed the man had quit his job and did not have the money to support his family. He was also involved in a legal dispute with his estranged wife when the incident took place.

“He’d been warned that without hydro and possibly without an apartment, he was likely to lose access to Chloe and Aubrey and he had had thoughts of suicide,” the prosecutor said.

Berry has pleaded not guilty to the second-degree murder of the children.
