A 28-year-old man in India killed his pregnant wife, and then sat next to her body for two days before surrendering to the police.

The incident took place in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh. The accused -- identified as Rajnikant Dixit -- told the police he came home on Saturday to find his wife with another man, the Times of India reported.

Dixit then got into a heated argument with her, which continued to the next day, and in a fit of rage he strangled his wife to death.

“Firstly, the accused had tried to bury the body under the floor of the house and for which he had dug a part of the floor. But when he failed, he tried to dump the body in the sewer line of the house but couldn’t. Dixit further said that he sat near the body for almost two days,” the Times of India quoted a police officer as saying.

Dixit, who went to the police station and surrendered, told the cops his wife was having an extra-marital affair, and added he left the victim's body at their house. The police arrived at the scene, and sent the 25-year-old woman's body for an autopsy.

The accused and his wife, Khushi, got married 10 months ago. Two months after the wedding Khushi got pregnant with their first child.

In a similar incident, a man in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu killed his estranged wife as he suspected her of cheating on him. He reportedly slit her throat before running his car over her. The man, identified as Gokul Kumar, allegedly went to the house of his estranged wife and attacked her. He also tried injuring her parents. The 33-year-old woman, identified as Keerthana, was rushed to a hospital, where she died. The police said the couple was married for three years. The two reportedly used to quarrel often after the man left his job during the COVID-19 lockdown in the country.
