A 34-year-old British man, who battled bipolar disorder, killed himself due to loneliness after self-isolation amid the coronavirus lockdown.

Daniel Furniss, who lived alone, was found dead at his house in Crookhorn, near Portsmouth, England, on the morning of March 27 after his family reported to the police that they were not able to contact him.

“One of the things he struggled with was being on his own,” said Daniel’s younger sister Chelsea Furniss told local media.

Daniel had put himself on isolation as he was deemed at high-risk to the novel coronavirus because he was diabetic.

"He lived on his own but would go out every day. Dan had diabetes and was classed as a high-risk person so after lockdown he was unable to go out, which we think pushed him over the edge,” she said.

Daniel had been unable to work because of his mental health condition as he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in his early teens.

"Dan brought a lot of joy to everyone’s lives. Although he was aged 34 he was just a big kid at heart,” she said.

Days before his death, Daniel put up a post on his Facebook account saying, "There is not enough guidance for people with mental health issues."

Due to the social distancing guidelines, only Dan's parents and four siblings will be allowed to attend his funeral.

"Daniel was loved and adored by so many people and it is unfortunate that at this time due to COVID-19 that only a few of us will be able to attend the funeral," Chelsea said in grief.

A GoFundMe page that was set up to help pay for Daniel’s funeral expense has already raised more than £2,000.

Chelsea is still recovering from the shock of her beloved brother’s death and has requested the authorities to help out those people struggling with mental health issues and are currently in isolation.

"More could be done to help people who are struggling while self-isolating. Hopefully what's happened with Dan can raise awareness of these issues," Chelsea said.

In a similar incident in New York City, 55-year-old Ricardo Cardona, a Bronx man vulnerable to COVID-19 because of his overweight and diabetic history, called 911 on himself. He was holding an antique gun and a ketchup-covered knife and threatened the cops that he would kill himself.
