  • Cristiano Ronaldo added Brighton & Hove Albion to the teams he scored against in his career
  • Manager Ralf Rangnick reiterated the need to put pressure on the visitors going into the second half
  • The Red Devils face Leeds United away from home on Saturday, February 19

Manchester United forward Cristiano Ronaldo continues to add to his already impressive legacy, and his performance in their 2-0 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion further pushed his credentials as one of the sport’s greatest scorers.

Ronaldo flashed a younger version of himself when he broke the scoring drought for both sides at the 51st minute, taking the ball for himself as two players attempted to close in on him before rifling home the goal that kept keeper Robert Sanchez rooted to the spot.

This marks a major milestone in Ronaldo’s career as it was the first-ever goal he had against the Seagulls–the 122nd team he has scored against dating back to his days in Portugal with Sporting FC.

“It was an amazing goal. Not only an important one but an amazing goal. Overall, it was also a good performance by Cristiano. Energetically he was online, he was always trying to help the other teammates,” interim manager Ralf Rangnick said as quoted by the team’s website.

The Red Devils found themselves in a 0-0 draw with Brighton & Hove Albion going into halftime and goalkeeper David de Gea revealed after the match that Rangnick told his team to play aggressively.

Rangnick’s words seemed to have inspired Ronaldo and Manchester United as a whole and took their manager’s challenge head-on by applying pressure on Brighton & Hove Albion’s defense to make mistakes which led to the Ronaldo goal.

Portuguese midfielder Bruno Fernandes put the icing on the cake with a swift counterattack that led to the game-sealing goal in stoppage time, giving Manchester United its first win since January 22 against West Ham United.

The Seagulls had an opportunity to break the hearts of the Red Devils with a strike from midfielder Jakub Moder, but his effort bounced off the crossbar at the 78th minute.

The 2-0 performance by a seemingly reenergized squad was everything that Manchester United fans had been eagerly waiting for in the past couple of weeks.

With the victory, Manchester United is now firmly in fourth place with 43 points in the English Premier League, four points away from third-place Chelsea and two points ahead of West Ham United.

Leeds United is next up on the plate for Manchester United on Saturday, February 19 before facing La Liga club Atletico Madrid in the first leg of the Round of 16 of the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday, February 23.
