Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced their decision to step back from their senior roles in the royal family at the beginning of the year. However, a royal expert believes the decision was solely made by the former “Suits” star.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex released their statement without warning Queen Elizabeth about their plan and created further tension in the royal family. As a result, the couple lost the use of the “Sussex Royal” name, and Prince Harry lost his honorary military appointments.

Richard Fitzwilliams told Express.co.uk that while the couple feels confident about their decision to distance themselves from the royal family, Meghan may have pushed Harry to cut ties with his old life.

“Meghan is undoubtedly the main force behind the change, which has led to Harry to give up everything he has been brought up to value,” he said.

“She will welcome a return to the celebrity world she knows and loves and has friends like Oprah, the Clooney’s, Serena Williams and Jennifer Lopez who will help them achieve financial self-sufficiency and earn megabucks.”

Although the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have the option to return to their royal roles, Fitzwilliams claimed it is highly unlikely. “It is clear, however, that at present they have no intention whatsoever of changing their mind, though the Queen has emphasized that they will be welcome back if they do,” he said.

“The agreement between the Queen and the Sussexes will be reassessed in a year,” the royal commentator added.

Prince Harry and Meghan wrapped up their royal duties following their appearance at the Commonwealth Day service. For the rest of 2020, the couple is expected to split their time between North America and the UK.
