Daimler AG has announced a recall of approximately 744,000 Mercedes-Benz vehicles due to a hazardous sunroof defect. The German company confirmed on Saturday that the part on models from 2001-2011 could potentially detach and injure the driver.

Among the models affected include ones from the C-Class, CLK-Class, CLS-Class, and E-Class lines. The issue stems from the bonding between the glass panel of the sunroof and the sliding room frame. This aspect of the vehicles’ construction has been found to be insufficient, potentially causing it to fall apart.

Dealerships can inspect affected models to see if they possess the sunroof defect and replace the part if needed. Any Mercedes customers who have already paid to have the issue fixed can seek reimbursement for the repair from Daimler. The company will contact owners about the issue by Feb. 14.

Mercedes-Benz USA recently agreed to an up to $20 million penalty payment for its mishandling of recalls in the U.S. This ruling followed a year-long government investigation into over a million vehicle recalls which found that Mercedes-Benz failed to notify owners of recalls in a timely enough manner.

The company will have to pay at least $13 million and a further $7 million if it fails to comply with the terms of the agreement.
