The Met Gala has come and gone, but we’re still buzzing about fashion’s biggest night. As always the theme of this year’s event was up for interpretation, which meant some celebrity attendees looks were more on point than others.

The 2017 Met Gala celebrated Comme des Garçons. Some stars hit the red carpet wearing the designs of Rei Kawakubo, the mastermind behind the label, while others borrowed bits and pieces of her personal style. Less daring folks arrived wearing gowns that were beautiful, but could have been seen on any red carpet, any day of the year.

Year after year famous folks seize the opportunity to go above and beyond, arriving at the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art wearing over-the-top creations from the most in-demand designers. This year was no different, as stars like Nicki Minaj, Gigi Hadid, Jourdan Dunn, Blake Lively and more dared to be different.

The event draws only the most fashionable stars in Hollywood. The Olsen twins, Rihanna, Kim Kardashian and Kanye West, Beyoncé, Lupita Nyong'o and more have become staples on the Met Gala red carpet. They’re known for not shying away from bold looks in the name of being on-theme.

Before the Met Gala, International Business Times caught up with “Fashion Police” host Melissa Rivers to discuss the event and, more specifically, the theme. While Met Gala fashion is truly unpredictable, Rivers was able to make some educated guesses on what viewers may see on the carpet this year. Based on the label’s history, she told IBT celebrities were likely to go “big.”

“I was actually just looking back at a lot of Comme des Garçons pictures and everything’s very exaggerated. I think we’re going to see a lot of over exaggeration,” she speculated. “There’s so many facets to Comme des Garçons from the sort of androgynous to the very Björk Avant-garde to the lines that are done in conjunction with other designers and brands and stores. I think it’s open to so much interpretation.”

When asked what sets this event apart from other red carpet nights, the 49-year-old called it “a steroided red carpet.” Rivers explained that the fashions often delve into costume. She explained that classically pretty gowns just don’t cut it at the Met Gala — though stars must be wary of getting too costumey when preparing for the big event.

“The trains are longer, it delves more into costume rather than gown,” she said. “You have to sort of put that mind set on instead of saying, ‘this is absolutely ridiculous.’ You have to realize none of this is for actual wearing.”

To really nail a Met Gala look, celebrities must work with designers to bring their vision to life. Rivers said that preparing for the biggest night in fashion is more like putting together a class project than picking out a gown for your average award show. It requires more than popping in at a fashion house and requesting a few looks from the designer.

“It’s really a project versus, ‘Hi, I’m doing eight award shows and I need eight gowns,’” the “Fashion Police” star explained. “[The Met Gala] is truly like a big class project. It’s much more of a performance.”
