Although Sofia Black-D’Elia has already starred in a handful of TV shows and movies before getting the role of Sabrina Pemberton on “The Mick,” the FOX series is actually her first-ever comedy project. So what was it about “The Mick” that pushed her to try comedy for the first time?

“I wanted to do this show because: A) Kaitlin [Olson] has been an idol of mine for a decade; B) because the script was the funniest thing I read all year; and C) because I thought if I’m going to do this for the first time, I’m probably gonna screw up a lot, and I really want to screw up around people that I feel safe with,” Black-D’Elia recently told Papermag.

Black-D’Elia added that Olson’s “maternal” nature has greatly helped her become comfortable in comedy. “Kaitlin is a safety net,” the young actress said of her co-star, who plays Mickey Molng on the series. “Every day she reassures the entire cast, ‘I’m never going to let you go home feeling like you didn’t do a great job at work. I will be here for you and I will help you through it.’ So I feel really lucky because I can’t imagine doing comedy for the first time without that, and it really has been one of the most fun jobs I’ve ever had.”

In separate interview with Yahoo TV last January, Black-D’Elia revealed that she felt a connection to Olson the moment she tested with her. “When I tested with her, I felt instantly connected to her and felt safe and comfortable to fail — which is really important when you’re new at comedy — and that’s such a testament to Kaitlin and how warm and welcoming she can be,” said Black-D’Elia. “I definitely felt that there was like a spark between us and I was like, ‘This is special and I really hope that I get this job because it felt right.’”

Apparently, Olson — who also serves as executive producer on the show — likewise saw something special about Black-D’Elia. “I picked those kids and worked with them a lot during auditions,” Olson told Fairfax of Black D’Elia and her onscreen siblings Thomas Barbusca and Jack Stanton, who plays Chip and Ben Pemberton, respectively. “They are all wonderful. They have completely different energies and all bring something special and unique to the show.”
