KEY POINTS

  • Mindy Kaling gave birth to a son, whom she named Spencer, on Sept. 3
  • The actress is also mother to Katherine, 2, whom she welcomed in 2017
  • Kaling has not revealed the identity of her children’s father

Mindy Kaling announced on Thursday that she gave birth to her second child, a boy named Spencer, in September.

The actress and writer revealed the big news during a virtual appearance on "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert." Kaling is also mother to Katherine, 2, whom she welcomed on Dec. 15, 2017.

"I'm telling it for the first time now, it feels so strange. But I gave birth to a baby boy on Sept. 3," Kaling told Colbert.

"No one even knew you were pregnant!" Colbert responded.

"I know! I know! This is news to a lot of people," the actress said. "It's true."

News of Kaling’s second baby came as a surprise as the "Mindy Project" actress managed to keep her pregnancy under wraps due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Kaling also kept her pregnancy with Katherine secret until her "Wrinkle in Time" co-star Oprah Winfrey revealed the news.

"She did announce it," Kaling said on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" in October 2017. "If anyone is going to announce big news about your private life, Oprah Winfrey is the person. You can’t complain that much about it. And you also can’t be like, 'Hey, Oprah, zip it’ — because she’s almost like a religious figure."

Kaling has not revealed the identity of her children's father. Her "Office" castmate and former boyfriend, B.J. Novak, is her daughter Katherine's godfather.

Kaling's announcement comes on the heels of the release of her book, "Nothing Like I Imagined (Except for Sometimes)," where she opens up about life as a single parent.

Although she described being single as "liberating," Kaling admitted that there are times when she longs for a husband, especially when she’s alone at parties or when kids' books mention daddies, Today reported.

In her new book, Kaling also opened up about the challenges of bringing up her children without her mother, Dr. Swati Chokalingam, who died in 2012 following a battle with pancreatic cancer.

Kaling recalled breaking down in tears during her daughter's Mundan ceremony, where the baby's head is shaved. The ceremony is believed to help the child get rid of negativity from their past life.

Kaling placed a bag of her daughter's hair next to a photo of her mom after the ceremony.

"It finally dawned on me," Kaling wrote. “I have a child who will never know her grandmother, the person who was the closest to me in the world. And I was about to start this journey with my daughter by myself."
