“Modern Family” Season 9 just premiered on ABC on Wednesday night, but already there are talks that Season 10 could be the last for the series.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, “Modern Family” cast member Ty Burrell was asked what he wants to be explored in the series if there will only be two seasons left for him and his co-stars.

“I’m excited to think about, you know, it really is a hard thing in real life, people finding their identities when they’re without their kids, and also the kids finding their identities as they become more independent. I think that’s really what we’re going to be exploring over the next two years. What do the kids become? What becomes their paths and also what of Phil and Claire? What are they gonna decide to do on their own? Other than jet-packing?” he said.

In the Season 9 premiere, Phil (Burrell) and Claire (Julie Bowen) managed to spend time with their three children. But two of them, Haley (Sarah Hyland) and Alex (Ariel Winter), have already moved out of the house. Luke (Nolan Gould) recently graduated from high school, so he will most likely move out in the near future.

According to Burrell, Phil and Claire have mixed feelings over their children becoming grownups. “They are and they aren’t. The kids, like a lot of people in the 18 to 25 range, they tend to hang out, they tend not to be moving out… So, Phil and Claire are going through wanting to be empty nesters, wanting the kids of move out, and then when the kids are out of the house at different points, they’re missing them. That’s where they’re at,” he explained.

Meanwhile, the premiere for “Modern Family” Season 9 also shed light on the possibility of the series ending in the next two years. In “Lake Life,” Jay (Ed O’Neill) wondered what his legacy will be after he learned that his friend passed away. Jay also happens to be the oldest member of the Pritchett clan.

“Modern Family” Season 9 airs Wednesdays at 9 p.m. EDT on ABC.
