“Mortal Kombat 11’s” story, as seen in the trailers, gets complicated as alternate timelines are dragged into the mix. However, some of “Mortal Kombat 11’s story can also be found in the Krypt. Here’s what we know about the Krypt.

“Mortal Kombat 11’s” Krypt also follows a similar shop format like the previous games. Players will control a nameless graverobber as he pillages chests for loot and riches in familiar areas of the game’s world. However, this character is assisted by a Mortal Kombat villain and future DLC character, Shang Tsung. The current Krypt is set on Shang Tsung’s Island where the central Mortal Kombat tournament in story happened.

Even though the evil sorcerer owns the island, he lets the character take what they want but players need the right resources to open up the chests. Moreover, Shang Tsung seems hospitable to the player and even tells stories about the new areas that players venture into.

While this character singlehandedly pries open chests, players can also access some tools they can use to further interact with the Krypt. Early in the Krypt, the players would pick up Shao Kahn’s hammer at a pedestal. This weapon from one of Mortal Kombat’s biggest villains is used to break pots for Koins, and bust down cracked walls and doors to open up new paths.

Other tools will be accessible similar to this fashion. Every tool that the Krypt character picks up will be from a Mortal Kombat character that would be present in previous Mortal Kombat entries. To avoid spoilers, picking up these tools would help explain the presence and even absence of some characters from “Mortal Kombat X” to “Mortal Kombat 11.” To know who those are, you’ll have to explore the Krypt way beyond the main courtyard and into Goro’s Lair to find out. One tool pickup also confirms that Shang Tsung isn’t just an disembodied voice that assists you in the game.

So far, “Mortal Kombat 11’s” story mode unlocks Frost, a former pupil of Sub-Zero, who fights with her own style of cryomancy paired with cyborg capabilities. Potentially, Shang Tsung’s unlock requirements might also be tied to all the content found in the Krypt and possibly allow the players to play as him for free.
