A 35-year-old mother in Bengaluru, India, allegedly beat her 9-year-old daughter with a wooden log and burned her hand with a candle for playing at a neighbor’s home.

The alleged incident happened in the third week of June, but police were alerted Monday when the unidentified girl was brought to a hospital in Hebbal with injuries on her right hand, The Times of India reported. Doctors alerted authorities after seeing burn marks on the girl's hand.

A female officer recorded a statement from the child, who alleged that she was beaten and had her hand burned by her mother, who was also not named in the report.

“I was playing at a neighbor’s house. My mother had gone out for work. When she returned, she lost control after seeing me at their house. After taking me home, she beat me with a wooden log and later burnt my right hand with a candle,” the girl told the officer, according to The Times of India.

The girl had sustained injuries on the same hand when she fell while playing Monday.

“My mother took me to the hospital and doctors asked me about the burn marks,” the girl told the officer.

Following the girl's statements, police filed a case against the mother under Section 324 (voluntarily causing hurt with dangerous objects) of the Indian Penal Code and relevant sections of the Juvenile Justice Act, India Today reported.

The mother was arrested but has since been released on station bail.

The woman denied burning her daughter’s hand with a candle and told police she only hit the girl with a log.

According to police, the woman was separated from her husband and lives with their second daughter in RT Nagar. Their eldest daughter and the husband also live separately. To survive, the 35-year-old woman took on odd jobs, police said.

"The woman claims she was frustrated on seeing the child at the house of the neighbor, who always spoke ill of her," The Times of India quoted police as stating.
