Former NASA astronaut Michael Collins, who was part of the historic Apollo 11 mission in 1969, recently revealed via Twitter that he believes that there is alien life that exists outside of Earth.

Collins, who flew to the Moon along with Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, maneuvered the Command Module of the Apollo mission. He has since become one of the most recognized astronauts of our time and a stalwart supporter of bringing humans to Planet Mars.

In a Twitter Q&A, Collins, who has 56,000 followers on the social media platform, encouraged them to submit questions about space and of course his most unforgettable mission. A Twitter follower then proceeded to ask the 88-year old former astronaut if he thinks “life outside of Earth” exists, linking it with the hashtag #AskMichaelCollins.

Collins answered, “Yes.”

The reply naturally garnered a lot of attention and excitement from followers who also chipped in their thoughts on the issue, most of the also believe that there are aliens lurking somewhere in the universe.

Twitter user Fernando Leon said, “I believe too but there is no evidence to support my belief.” Meanwhile, Angela Byrne replied: “Yes, definitely… it would be crazy not to… and very scary.”

Per a report, Collins flew the Command Module around the Moon in July 1969, which eventually brought both Armstrong and Aldrin who descended to the lunar surface for the first time in human history. NASA said that Collins was “selected by NASA as an astronaut in 1963, he served as the pilot for Gemini X and as the command module pilot for the Apollo 11 mission, the first time humans set foot on another celestial body.”

NASA has been working hard for years trying to find evidence of life outside Earth. In its current Mars mission, the space agency’s Curiosity rover’s main task is to find evidence of life and also find water on the Red Planet. Water is an essential element for life to survive so finding it on Mars back in 2015 was a major breakthrough.

Although there is no concrete evidence yet of actual life being found on the planet, there have been some exciting close calls. A few months ago, for example, the Curiosity rover was able to measure unusual amounts of methane gas in the Martian atmosphere. Back here on Earth, methane often signals the existence of living microbes.

The initial report from The New York Times showed that the methane measurements are 21 parts per billion, three times the time when the methane gas spiked in 2013. However, as fast as it spiked, the methane gas also crashed, making scientists believe that it was a fluke.

The discovery has inspired scientists to continue looking for ways to prove that life still exists on the alien planet.
