KEY POINTS

  • Aaron Gordon could be a big upgrade for the Bulls
  • Aaron Gordon and Zach LaVine could join forces to make the Bulls more exciting to watch
  • Lauriu Markkanen continues to struggle, needing more time to develop

The Chicago Bulls are keeping their heads afloat although getting some help is an obvious need. They are dealing with a big hole up front with Otto Porter II and Chandler Hutchinson out with injuries. Aaron Gordon, best known for his athleticism and slam-dunks could be an interesting target.

With the Magic, Gordon has not exactly had a great 2019-20 NBA season. A look at Basketball Reference shows the 6-foot-8 forward averaging 13.3 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 3.0 assists in 27 games. However, his shooting percentage has dived compared to last season. From a 44.9-percent average from the field, the fourth overall pick of the 2014 NBA Draft has hit 40.7-percent from the floor which is a career-low.

Also, adding Gordon would add a bit of excitement to the Bulls. He was taken in the same draft class as Zach LaVine and both do have a history -- particularly the 2016 NBA Slam Dunk Contest. Chicago could have a pair of high flyers at their disposal. But the question is who will the Bulls trade for Gordon?

With the Bulls focusing on guards to carry the load, an unpopular trade bait could be Lauri Markannen. At 22, the Finnish cager has struggled to fit in with Jim Boylen's system. Aware that Chicago is focusing on youth development, trading Markkanen for Gordon will likely raise eyebrows. It may seem like a long shot but nevertheless an option.

If not Markkanen, the Bulls could consider other players on the roster. There is Thaddeus Young, Wesley Iwundu or even Melvin Frazier who could be dangled. Porter and Markkanen could be offered as well. In all, it depends on how the Bulls and Magic treat the numbers crunch. Gordon has about $53 million remaining in his current deal which runs until the 2021-22 NBA season.

In a previous report, it was mentioned how the Bulls could pick up a thing or two from the Jordan Clarkson trade. Kris Dunn was the player in focus and the target was Jrue Holiday of the New Orleans Pelicans. But the Bulls need help at the forward position. Gordon is an option but Chicago is likely to skim the market for other options before the Feb. 6 trade deadline.
