  • Dellavedova is helping young guards quietly raise their game
  • Sexton credits Dellavedova for improvements
  • Dellevedova hopes to return for Cavs next season

The Cleveland Cavaliers are in an odd situation right now but the future is looking bright. The Cavs did have some positives this season, particularly the upped play of Collin Sexton and rookie Darius Garland. Of the two, it is the sophomore shining bright as he has led the team despite an unfortunate 2019-20 NBA season.

Most saw a lot of promise in the 21-year-old guard and he is living up to the hype. However, the 8th overall pick of the 2018 NBA Draft admits that his success would not be possible with the proper guidance. One veteran on the Cavaliers roster who has been helping him is Matthew Dellavedova. Sexton admits that the Australian guard has been helping him out in a lot of ways behind the scenes, Cleveland.com reported.

“Delly, part of the championship team, he knows what it is to be a pro. Just coming in every day and listening to him. If it’s a timeout, you guys will see he’ll come straight to me and say, ‘You could have done this’ or ‘Could have done that’ or ‘Look for this, look for that.’ It’s been big for my development. You see what he does, especially when he gets out there, he passes the ball amazingly. He just makes the right basketball play," Sexton said.

In 63 games, Sexton has been putting up good numbers. He has averaged 20.6 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 2.9 assists. For someone only in his second year, those are big jumps from his rookie season. Sexton averaged 16.7 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 3.0 assists last NBA season.

Unfortunately, the efforts of Sexton have not been able to help in the Cavs 2019-20 campaign. They are out of the playoffs and currently sport a 19-45 record in the Eastern Conference. Cleveland also had head coaching change recently, dismissing John Beilein and naming JB Bickerstaff as its new coach. The move has so far restored some harmony from within the team with several players praising the change. This includes Sexton who mentioned in a previous post that they are now having fun playing and have a purpose.

As for Dellavedova, it will be interesting if his mentorship will figure prominently in his future. Set to earn $9.6 million this year, the one-time NBA champion will become an unrestricted free agent this summer. He was hardly a factor this season although he is now getting minutes. It remains to be seen if his efforts will be enough to keep him with the team this summer.
