KEY POINTS

  • Iguodala did not expect to go to the Heat
  • Iguodala had a part-time before getting traded by the Grizzlies
  • Iguodala could end his career with Heat unless Warriors still get him

Andre Iguodala was a top name before the NBA trade deadline with several teams being mentioned. To the surprise of many, the 36-year-old ended up with the Miami Heat - a team that was hardly linked to Iguodala. Moments before the deal fell through, it turns out that Iguodala had no idea he would be headed to South Beach as well.

Shams Charania of The Athletic shared interesting information detailing some events before the trade was made. While appearing on the "Pardon My Take" podcast, he shared that it turns out that he really had no idea or intention to play for the Miami Heat. Iguodala was in Silicon Valley and had a part-time job with an unnamed company.

According to Charania, Iguodala told him that the Heat emerged as a suitor two days before the trade deadline. The 2015 NBA FInals MVP had trouble believing it would go down and that it would be nothing more than chatter. The rest is something most know already by now.

There is no doubt that the Heat landed a big (surprising) fish in Iguodala. The veteran also ended up with a two-year deal worth $30 million, big numbers for someone most thought would be hanging it up soon. In six games, Iguodala has hardly made a difference with only 4.3 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 2.0 assists. OF course, most don't expect the 6-foot-6 swingman to put up big numbers - at least early on. It is an investment and Iggy seems more like an insurance for the Heat moving forward.

At any rate, Iguodala would be 38 years old by the time his deal with the Heat runs out. The next thing in people's minds is will this be the final deal for the NBA veteran or will he play until he is 40. Prior to joining the Heat, there was the word that Iguodala wanted to finish his career with the Dubs. But this assumption was made with the understanding the one-time NBA All-Star would be getting only a one year deal. Hence, no one really saw him getting a two-year deal.

Regardless of what happens, Iguodala is a vital addition to the Miami Heat. He joins a team not most saw going beyond the regular season with team president Pat Riley trying to rebuild the team. At the rate things are going, Miami may have just recalibrated its course. If not this year, the Heat could end up being in the NBA finals next season and possibly win another title. For Iguodala, it could be his fourth.
