KEY POINTS

  • Isaiah Thomas could have better opportunities with the Celtics
  • The Celtics can get an added boost from Thomas
  • Thomas is unlikely to get minutes with the Lakers

Isaiah Thomas could be playing again this 2021-22 NBA season, with the Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers reportedly interested in the 5-foot-9 guard.

Regardless of whether he joins the Celtics or Lakers, it will be a reunion for the 32-year-old guard.

However, he may also want to factor in the chances of playing time with both teams.

For the Lakers, the chances of him getting reasonable playing time are not looking good.

With Russell Westbrook and Kendrick Nunn expected to alternate at the point guard post, Thomas would need to work and prove to head coach Frank Vogel that he deserves longer time on the court.

When he suited up for the Lakers during the 2017-18 season, he played in 17 games averaging 15.6 points, 5 assists, and 2.1 rebounds in 26.8 minutes of action.

Given the guard rotation of the Lakers right now, getting those numbers again does not look promising.

As for the Celtics, Thomas could have a better chance of re-establishing himself. Marcus Smart is there, but the big story is the one-year signing of Dennis Schroder, ironically a former Laker.

The point guard position is a big problem for the Celtics, and Schroder is seen as a short-term fix.

Thomas spent three seasons with the Celtics and owns averages of 24.7 points, 6 assists and 2.7 rebounds in 32.2 minutes of play.

After that run, things just went spiral for the All-Star guard that was aggravated by a hip injury.

Of course, a lot has changed for Thomas. Although he has proven he could still score in two Pro-Am games, Boston needs a leader and someone who can facilitate.

Should he end up with the Celtics, he would be added insurance if things don’t go well with Schroder.

Regardless, Thomas appears to be ready for a reunion if it comes. He gave his take on the possibility when he appeared on the Jalen & Jacoby show.

“I think the world wants that to happen because it only makes sense. If that opportunity presents itself, I know I can help that team, especially in the young guys over there in Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum,” Thomas stated.
