No one knows if the 2019-2020 NBA season will ever resume because of the coronavirus pandemic. The league suspended play indefinitely on March 11 when Utah Jazz center Rudy Gobert tested positive for COVID-19, and professional sports in the United States don’t appear close to returning.

In the best-case scenario, each NBA team would play a handful of games in the summer before starting the playoffs. There’s virtually no chance that the regular season, which is less than 80% complete, will be finished.

The Los Angeles Lakers (49-14) and Milwaukee Bucks (53-12) have the best records in basketball. They are virtually guaranteed to remain atop the overall NBA standings if the season comes back.

The Lakers have a 5.5-game edge as the No.1 seed in the West. They are set up for a potential matchup in the conference finals against the L.A. Clippers (44-20), who are the No.2 seed. The Denver Nuggets (43-22) and Jazz (41-23) are set to have home-court advantage in the first round of the playoffs.

The Lakers are the only West team that has officially clinched a postseason berth. Assuming that no team will play more than 10 remaining regular-season games, the top-four seeds, as well as the Oklahoma City Thunder (40-24), Houston Rockets (40-24) and Dallas Mavericks (40-27), will clinch a playoff berth if the season returns.

The Bucks own the top seed in both East and the entire league. Milwaukee would have home-court advantage in the 2020 NBA Finals.

The defending champion Toronto Raptors (46-18) are 6.5 games behind the Bucks as the No.2 seed. The Boston Celtics (43-21) are the third and final team that has clinched an Eastern Conference playoff spot.

The Miami Heat (41-24), Indiana Pacers (39-26) and Philadelphia 76ers (39-26) are all well on their way to the postseason.
