KEY POINTS

  • The Cavs are more likely to deal JaVale McGee first and let Andre Drummond play out the rest of the eason
  • The Cleveland franchise has no plans of trading Jarret Allen
  • Drummond needs to improve his game after a couple of poor performances

One team that could be active by the NBA trade deadline on Mar. 25 is the Cleveland Cavaliers.

They have three big men right now, and these players could be dealt as the deadline approaches.

These three are Andre Drummond, JaVale McGee and new acquisition Jarret Allen. Of the three, the most likely player to be dealt by the Cleveland Cavaliers is McGee.

However, the Cavs could get a better exchange for Drummond, someone who is set to become a free agent after the 2020-21 NBA season.

For now, a Drummond trade is nowhere near happening. According to Chris Fedor of Cleveland.com, the name of the 27-year-old center may be floating in the NBA trade rumor mill but nothing is imminent for now.

At least two teams are interested in Drummond. They are the Toronto Raptors and the Brooklyn Nets.

But as mentioned in a previous post, it may take a Drummond buyout for them and other NBA clubs to acquire the two-time All-Star. This holds for teams who do not have the proper budget to absorb the remainder of Drummond’s $28.7 million-worth contract.

After Drummond, the next target would be Jarret Allen. Considering the 6-foot-11 center is only 22 and has shown potential, the Cavs are likely to keep him for a while.

Hence, the logical target that Cleveland could deal out is McGee–the same guy that got displaced when Allen arrived last January.

For now, the Cavs could hold on to Drummond and Allen until the current NBA season ends. However, the next question is their roles.

Drummond has been struggling a bit in February, and Cavs coach J.B. Bickerstaff could be making some adjustments. That includes possibly seeing the 6-foot-10 cager coming off the bench if his performance does not improve.

Thankfully, Allen has been stepping up. This is backing claims that adjustments could be made in the next couple of games.

Seeing that the Cavs are struggling to win games, Drummond is visibly frustrated. However, he explains that it is the usual reaction from any player and that this does not change his excitement suiting up and playing ball.

"So it's taking a toll. That's really all it is. And that doesn't change my excitement and my joy of playing the game and being on this team. It's a frustrating time right now trying to figure out how to get some wins. That's all," Drummond told reporters via The Athletic.
