New Year’s Day is coming up and it falls on a Monday this year - meaning certain stores and businesses will be closed or running on modified schedules on a day when there are usually full business hours.

It’s safe to guess that most stores will be closed on the national holiday as will other non-essential establishments. Restaurants may have shortened hours if they’re open at all. New Year’s Day tends to be one of the few days a year when most businesses close down.

Most people take the day to prepare to start the new year off right, either resting up, setting goals or maybe even nursing a hangover from the festivities the night before. But for those who have plans to head out into the world this year, here’s what will be open:

Are banks open on New Year’s Day?

Basically, no banks in the United States will be open on New Year’s Day. While ATMs will be available, no actual banks will be open on the first day of 2018. This is pretty standard. Some banks will be open on the day of New Year’s Eve though, so anyone who really needs to get some banking done before the end of the year should check the Sunday and holiday schedules of their local branch.

Is the post office open on New Year’s Day?

No post offices in the United States will be open on New Year’s Eve Day or New Year’s Day. The post office is run by the government and they’re non-essential so they’re all closed for the national holiday. “Post Office locations nationwide will be closed on New Year’s Eve, Sunday, December 31 and on New Year’s Day, Monday, January 1,” says the United States Postal Service website. But branches will reopen with regular hours on Tuesday, Jan. 2. No regular mail will be delivered Sunday or Monday, but Priority Mail Express will be.

Are trains running on normal schedules on New Year’s Day?

The MTA has scheduled more trains to travel in and out of New York City for New Year’s Eve and early on New Year’s Day, following the early morning trains the railway will operate on a regular holiday schedule. The exact schedules can be viewed online. The Long Island Railroad schedule can be found here and the Metro North schedule changes can be found here.

Transportation within cities will be a bit different on the holiday as well. In New York the subway will operate on a Sunday schedule on Monday, New Year’s Day. In Boston on New Year’s Day the transportation will also all run on Sunday schedules, with the exception of the ferry which will not run. In Washington, D.C. and Chicago the metro will also be running on Sunday/Holiday schedules.
