The father of a 6-year-old girl in New York was charged with attempted manslaughter after he allegedly stabbed his daughter on Thursday. He initially claimed that two men mugged him and then stabbed the girl.

According to police, the man, identified as 55-year-old Gia Pan, initially claimed that he was walking with his daughter near the intersection of Monroe and Pike streets in Manhattan in the wee hours of Thursday, when two knife-wielding men approached them.

Pan said he was mugged by the two men. They took his credit cards and a bracelet before fleeing the scene on foot. He also told the police that one of the suspects stabbed his daughter in the stomach. The girl was rushed to Bellevue Hospital, where she underwent surgery. Pan, however, suffered no injuries during the incident.

On Thursday evening, the police released a statement saying that they believe the man made up the story and it was Pan who stabbed his daughter.

A police spokesperson, also said the stabbing incident actually took place on the upper west side, and the duo then traveled downtown.

Pan was taken into custody without an incident. He was charged with attempted manslaughter, reckless endangerment, assault, and endangering the welfare of a minor. His arraignment was pending.

The girl remained in the hospital as of Thursday night and was expected to recover. Her injuries were reported to be non-life-threatening.

The motive behind the attack was unknown. According to local reports, no arrests were made yet. The police were on the lookout for the other two men. The investigation was ongoing and no further details are available at the moment.
