A newborn baby in India died last week after the child's teenage mother allegedly threw the infant out of a bathroom window.

The incident, which took place in the western state of Maharashtra, came to light after the police were informed about a newborn lying in the parking premises of a cooperative housing society in the city of Navi Mumbai.

The baby was then rushed to a hospital where doctors declared the newborn dead, the Indian Express reported. The mother of the child was also admitted to a hospital.

Authorities said the 19-year-old woman, who was staying with her relatives, had hidden her pregnancy from her family. She decided to deliver the baby on her own in the bathroom on the intervening night of January 12 and 13, following which she threw the child out of the window.

The police have filed a complaint against the unidentified woman, and charged her under Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code, the Times of India reported.

The woman was also charged under Section 315, which punishes "whoever before the birth of any child does any act with the intention of thereby preventing that child from being born alive or causing it to die after its birth, and does by such act prevent that child from being born alive, or causes it to die after its birth."

In a similar incident last week, a 20-year-old unmarried woman reportedly threw her newborn from the window of her washroom, allegedly killing the baby. The incident took place in the northern state of Delhi. The woman threw the baby from the third floor of the apartment building, where she was staying. The locals found the baby lying on the road and rushed him to a hospital, where he was declared dead. "The woman, identified as Priya, confessed to throwing away her newborn from the washroom's window on the third floor," a senior officer said. "We have registered a case under section 302 (murder) and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of offense, or giving false information to screen offender) of the Indian Penal Code, and the accused woman is presently in the hospital and is under observation," the deputy commissioner of police said at the time.
