  • Joe Thomas believes Baker Mayfield lost the plot with the organization
  • Mayfield's letter is what prompted the Browns to trade for Deshaun Watson
  • The Buccaneers could be Mayfield's next destination

The Cleveland Browns are still believed to be on the search for a trade partner to send former starting quarterback Baker Mayfield elsewhere after acquiring the Houston Texans’ Deshaun Watson.

Mayfield and the Browns were originally thought to be an inseparable duo, but former Browns offensive tackle Joe Thomas believes it was Mayfield who messed it all up.

The 10-time Pro Bowler revealed his thoughts on his “The Thom & Hawk Football Show” podcast.

“It seemed like Baker [Mayfield] overplayed his hand a little bit because the interesting thing was at that moment, the Browns were out of the Deshaun Watson sweepstakes. And it seemed by all accounts that they were ready to do what it took to smooth things over with Baker,” said Thomas.

However, the turning point in the Mayfield versus Browns front office saga was the former Heisman Trophy winner penning a letter that seemed to hint at his impending departure.

Mayfield, understandably upset with the whole situation, then privately asked for a trade out of Cleveland since he felt undervalued.

The all-time great tackle then explained that the 26-year-old from Austin, Texas could have made amends with the organization than to smoothen things out, but the situation got even worse instead.

“He [Baker Mayfield] got a little sensitive about it, he got a little emotional. He went radio silence on the Cleveland Browns and said ‘You have to trade me to the Indianapolis Colts,’ thinking he was perceived as a franchise quarterback in the NFL and that he could kind of dictate the terms of where he was going to be traded,” Thomas later added.

Now at the point of no return, Mayfield is still on the market and there are no teams explicitly stating their interest in him.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have been in the search for a quarterback to back up the now unretired Tom Brady, and Mayfield joining the Super Bowl-winning organization could do wonders for him both on the field and off the field.

Mayfield has one more year on his contract, and he might as well make the most out of it by joining the Buccaneers and learning from the best quarterback of all time.
