  • Baker Mayfield could find himself on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this season
  • Buccs GM speaks about the possibility of adding Mayfield
  • Mayfield could serve as a backup to Tom Brady

The Cleveland Browns have made it clear that quarterback Baker Mayfield has no place on their team, but he could still find a place within the league if the Tampa Bay Buccaneers take a flyer on him.

Buccaneers general manager Jason Licht appeared on SirusXM’s “Mad Dog Sports Radio” to discuss the possibility of bringing in Mayfield as a backup to Tom Brady should the latter decide to permanently retire next season.

“Well, we would like to add someone. I don’t want to talk about a player that’s on another team’s roster right now, but we may still add a veteran quarterback. We’re just going to have to see where it goes from here,” said Licht.

Mayfield went from being a No. 1 option in Cleveland to losing his spot due to the arrival of controversial Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson after the Browns decided to trade for him.

Mayfield previously penned a love letter to the city of Cleveland and Browns fans for supporting him while also mentioning that he was not sure what to make of his future with the organization.

As it stands, the 26-year-old hailing from Austin, Texas is currently without a team and a move to another franchise should help rejuvenate his career, regardless if he gets the starting job right away or not.

Him becoming the backup to Brady in Tampa Bay is not as bad as it sounds as the 44-year-old’s wealth of championship experience and knowledge can definitely rub off on him.

However, fans of the Browns quarterback should not get their hopes up as Licht’s statements were not in anyway conclusive that they were definitely considering on a trade as of now.

Moving to the Indianapolis Colts, a team that Mayfield preferred to be dealt to, went out of the window for him after they acquired veteran quarterback Matt Ryan.

There is time for him to still find a team that would be interested in his services this season, but a starting role would be a near-impossibility.

Being a backup for a season would not entirely be a detriment to his career especially if he becomes an understudy to a quarterback that has spent most of his life as a top-performing quarterback.
