  • Normani will be performing her new single "Wild Side" at the 2021 VMAs

Nicki Minaj will no longer be performing at this year's MTV Video Music Awards.

The rapper revealed that she "pulled out" of a potential performance at the annual awards show while responding to a fan on Twitter on Thursday.

"Are you performing at the VMAs??????" the fan tweeted.

Minaj, who had not been announced as a performer at the 2021 VMAs, replied, "I just pulled out. I’ll explain why another day."

She went on to express her appreciation for the show's organizers, including producer Bruce Gilmer. "But I love those guys at MTV. Thank you Bruce. I love you so much. Next year we there baby," she added.

A number of fans expressed their disappointment in the comments section, with one writing, "Nicki, you do know the last time we got a performance of you was about 2 to 3 years ago?"

"Nicki!!! I'm about to f---ing cry [right now]. Why would you do this? We haven't seen you perform since 2019," another commented.

Others said they were looking forward to Minaj's next release. "Awww, I’m sure you pulled out for a great reason. I’m so excited to see what’s next. How far away are we until we get something??" a fan wrote.

MTV has yet to comment on Minaj's remarks. She had not yet been confirmed or announced as a performer, Entertainment Tonight reported.

The news of Minaj's departure came just days after Lorde also canceled her performance at the event.

"Due to a change in production elements, Lorde can no longer perform at this year’s show. We love Lorde and cannot wait for her to perform on the VMA stage in the future!" the VMAs tweeted earlier this month.

At the time, some social media users suggested that the organizers invite Normani.

"So sad… Anyways, REPLACE WITH NORMANI," one fan commented at the time. "Then let Normani perform," another wrote.

Fans' requests seemed to have reached the VMAs because MTV announced Thursday that the Fifth Harmony singer will be performing her latest single, "Wild Side," at the ceremony.

Normani last performed at the VMAs in 2019, with a rendition of her single "Motivation." She also took home her first Moonperson that year, for Best R&B for "Waves" featuring 6lack.

The 2021 VMAs will air live from Barclays Center in New York City on Sunday at 8 p.m. EDT.
