Chloe Zhao’s western-drama film “Nomadland” is making all the right noises before the announcement of the Academy Award nominations. The movie received six awards from the Online Films Critics Society, while Pixar’s animated feature “Soul” took home two trophies.

The winners were announced on the organization's official website. Zhao’s latest venture edged out movies like “One Night In Miami,” “First Cow,” “Minari,” “The Trial of the Chicago 7” and more to win the biggest accolade of the night. The film had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival and won the prestigious Golden Lion trophy to jumpstart the awards season.

Zhao also picked up the best director prize for “Nomadland” despite facing competition from filmmakers like Emerald Fennell (“Promising Young Woman”), Kelly Reichardt (“First Cow”), Spike Lee (“Da 5 Bloods”) and Eliza Hittman (“Never Rarely Sometimes Always”).

The film also picked up prizes in the adapted screenplay, editing and cinematography categories.

Frances McDormand (“Nomadland”) and Delroy Lindo (“Da 5 Bloods”) won the best actress and best actor trophies for their performances.

Another notable winner of the night was Maria Bakalova, the breakout star of “Borat: Subsequent Moviefilm.” The actress was named best supporting actress and moved one step closer to getting nominated for an Oscar.

Bakalova has already been named the best supporting actress by Boston Online Film Critics Association, Indiana Film Journalists Association, Chicago Film Critics Association and NYFCC so far.

Fennell’s debut feature “Promising Young Woman” won two accolades at this year’s event. The director emerged victorious in the original screenplay and best debut feature categories.

The Online Films Critics Society also named its top 10 movies of the year, which included “Nomadland,” “First Cow,” “I’m Thinking of Ending Things,” “The Trial of the Chicago 7” and more.

Nomadland
1. "Nomadland" (directed by Chloe Zhao) - Zhao's idea of immersing herself in a rural American subculture seems to have done wonders for the filmmaker. "Nomadland" follows the story of a woman named Fern (played by Frances McDormand) who has lost everything during the Great Recession. Fern embarks on a journey and starts living as a modern-day nomad. The film makes you strongly empathize with its characters and manages to encourage viewers to consider a nomadic life. McDormand is pure genius and blends into her character so well that viewers don't feel like they are watching a fictional character on the screen. The movie is a masterclass in the art of filmmaking and all its aspects.  Nomadland/ Searchlight Pictures
