  • Odell Beckham Jr. filed a lawsuit against Nike after the brand reportedly did not honor their side
  • He believes Nike fabricated his violations to lessen the money he will earn in his extension
  • Beckham says is owed $20 million by Nike

NFL free agent Odell Beckham Jr. is still currently in search of a franchise that will want to avail of his services in the open field, but that could take a backseat in the meanwhile as he is going after his biggest sponsor Nike.

In a photo shared across his social media accounts, the charismatic wide receiver revealed that his dream to be a Nike athlete has turned into a nightmare.

"Unfortunately, Nike did not honor its commitments. Throughout our partnership, I have kept my promise and fulfilled my obligations to the brand. I am extremely disappointed that I've had to take these measures to ensure Nike fulfils their obligations and promises," Beckham wrote.

"We are held responsible for fulfilling our obligations under our contracts, but we also have to hold powerful companies like Nike accountable for honoring their commitments too."

While Beckham neglected to divulge any information further as it is a legal matter, he did note that such happenings are a common occurrence in the sports world and that "it's time for change."

According to information obtained by TMZ Sports, Beckham laid out the following points in his claims:

  • Beckham considered moving to Adidas, but Nike exercised their right to match the Adidas deal, though the wide receiver claimed "the fine print was different."
  • Nike allegedly made it harder for Beckham to "trigger very valuable extensions" of his new contract.
  • March 2022 was when things apparently soured between Nike and Beckham after being withheld, without notice, "more than $2 million."
  • Nike reportedly withheld the payment due to Beckham committing "footwear and glove violations"
  • According to Beckham, he was "forced" to make personal changes to his cleats because Nike did not provide him with such that had the Los Angeles Rams' colors on it.
  • Regarding the gloves, Beckham also claimed that Nike "never had a problem with it in the past".
  • In Beckham's eyes, his violations were fabricated by Nike to "pressure him" into a less-than-ideal extension.
  • Overall, Beckham is chasing Nike for over $20 million.

Recognized globally for its Swoosh logo, Nike is arguably the most popular sports brand around the world thanks to its wide variety of merchandise that covers almost all sports.

As of November 11, Nike is reportedly worth $166.41 billion as per MacroTrends, but it has not stopped them from being the subject of lawsuits–the most notable one in recent memory being a gender discrimination lawsuit back in the summer.

It is a surprising turn of events for Beckham and Nike since there were no rumblings of discontent from the player's side until now.

While NFL fans eagerly await Beckham's return to the field, the Super Bowl LVI champion and two-time All-Pro will have a courtroom fight on his hands first as he seeks to get what he believes is owed to him.
