  • Oscar De La Hoya wants Vergil Ortiz Jr. to take on Terence Crawford
  • De La Hoya will work with Top Rank's Bob Arum to make that fight happen
  • Crawford still eyes a fight with Manny Pacquiao

Golden Boy Promotions boss Oscar De La Hoya is planning to work with Top Rank's Bob Arums to stage the ring encounter between WBO welterweight kingpin Terence Crawford and 2013 Junior Olympics winner Vergil Ortiz Jr. early next year

Following his sensational stoppage win over Kell Brook earlier this month, Crawford has arguably become the most in-demand welterweight slugger.

“Bud” has been vocal about his desire to share the ring with the world’s only eight-division titlist, Manny Pacquiao.

However, De La Hoya is optimistic that his undefeated fighter could get a crack at Crawford sooner than later.

For the 47-year-old former boxer, Ortiz is the type of competitor who can beat anybody in his weight class at this point, and Crawford is no exception.

“He has such big potential,” De La Hoya recently told BoxingScene.com of Ortiz. “We’re super excited about Vergil Ortiz. He’s so talented he can beat any welterweight out there right now."

“The only guy that I would think twice about would be Terence Crawford, but still it’s a fight that I would love to make now,” he continued. “I would put him in with Crawford next. We would most definitely do Crawford versus Vergil.”

Adding more weight to his massive plan, De La Hoya even suggests that he could use his good working relationship with Arum to negotiate the bout.

“I think working with Bob has always been a pleasure so I am sure it would be no problem,” he pointed out.

As for Ortiz, he is well aware he hasn’t fought someone as big as Crawford but thinks it is not too far from reality.

The Dallas, Texas native is confident that he can trade leather with any world champion or top-rated contender at 147 pounds.

“I definitely want to step up in competition,” Ortiz told the same outlet. “My opponents aren’t easy, but I know that I can fight better opponents. I know I can beat better opponents. That’s the only way I will be able to step up to the world title and get a world title shot. That’s what I’m trying to do.”

Meanwhile, Crawford is still yearning for a match against Pacquiao. The pair has already verbally agreed to take on each other, but a timeframe is yet to be discussed.

Apart from Crawford, Mikey Garcia has also been calling out Pacquiao and is still hoping he could secure a date with the Filipino legend.
