KEY POINTS

  • Academy unveils 344 films in contention for Best Picture
  • "The Irishman," "Joker," "Marriage Story," among the movies submitted to the organization
  • The nominees will be announced on Jan. 13

After announcing the shortlist for nine categories, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has now revealed how many movies are eligible for contention in the Best Picture category at the 92nd Academy Awards.

According to Variety, a total of 344 films have been submitted this year to the organization for getting a chance to win the biggest prize at the annual star-studded ceremony. “Avengers: Endgame,” “Ad Astra,” and “Booksmart” are among the movies that are eligible for contention at the Oscars.

Martin Scorsese’s epic crime drama “The Irishman” is also on the list and is considered to be one of the frontrunners. The movie has already created a wave across all the major award shows. The film starring Robert De Niro, Al Pacino and Joe Pesci was named Best Picture by the National Board Of Review (NBR) and is also one of the top 10 movies of 2019 by the American Film Institute (AFI). It was also named Best Film by the New York Film Critics Circle (NYFCC).

Another major contender on the list is Bong Joon Ho’s “Parasite.” The movie has been in the news for all the right reasons and is turning out to be a massive success for South Korea. Just yesterday, it was announced that the movie has been shortlisted for the Oscars in two categories, Best International Feature and Original Song.

The movie has already won over 40 awards around the world, including Best Film by New York Film Critics Online (NYFCO). It is also the first Korean film to garner three nods at the Golden Globes.

Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon A Time In Hollywood” is also up for contention while Todd Phillips’ take on the diabolical clown prince of Gotham, “Joker,” is also eligible for the award. Greta Gerwig’s “Little Women” is another contender that has been submitted for the coveted trophy.

Other entries like “Marriage Story,” “The Farewell,” “Uncut Gems,” “Ford v Ferrari” and “Knives Out” have also been included on the list. “Cats” and “Star Wars: Rise Of The Skywalker” are also in contention.

The official nominations for the 92nd Academy Awards will be announced on Jan. 13 and the star-studded event will take place on Feb. 9 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.
