  • Jenkins is first-ever female director to helm a "Star Wars" film
  • "Rogue Squadron" is scheduled to hit theaters in 2023

After helming two of the biggest movies in the DC Extended Universe, Patty Jenkins is heading to a galaxy far, far away as Disney announced that she will be directing a new “Star Wars” movie, titled “Rogue Squadron.”

Jenkins, who is just a couple of weeks away from the release of her second “Wonder Woman” film, will be the first-ever female director to helm a “Star Wars” movie. The announcement was made by Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy during Disney’s Investors Day in which the production giant introduced several new projects across various brands.

Jenkins also shared a video on her official Twitter account saying she always wanted to make the “greatest fighter pilot movie of all time” for quite a while now. The acclaimed filmmaker also said that she will be taking her father William T. Jenkins as an inspiration for the upcoming project.

Jenkin’s father was an Air Force captain and a fighter pilot who earned a Silver Star during the Vietnam War.

“When he (Jenkin’s father) lost his life in service to this country, I ignited a desire to turn all the tragedy and thrill into one day making the greatest fighter pilot movie of all time. But I couldn’t find the right story, until now. Now, I’ve found a movie about two things I love so I’m gonna see you very soon,” Jenkins said in the video.

The video ends with the “Monster” helmer wearing a flight suit of orange color and the iconic helmet that squadrons from the “Star Wars” wear while flying their jet planes.

Disney Chairman Bob Iger also shared his excitement on Twitter, saying that he is absolutely “thrilled” to have Jenkins on board the “Rogue Squadron” movie.

“We are thrilled to have the great Patty Jenkins directing our @StarWars feature film ‘Rogue Squadron,’ and as a true admirer of her work, it is an honor to have Patty directing her next film for us,” Iger wrote on Twitter.

The film is scheduled to hit the theaters on Christmas 2023.

The news of Jenkins entering the “Star Wars” universe comes almost seven months after it was revealed that Taika Waititi has been tapped to direct a new “Star Wars” movie.

Meanwhile, Jenkins is busy promoting her upcoming movie “Wonder Woman 1984.” The movie, which stars Gal Gadot as the titular character, will be arriving in theaters and on HBO Max on Christmas Day.
