Germany’s luxury carmaker Porsche has announced that will launch an electric version of its most popular model Macan in the next few years.

The “fully electric” Macan will go into production in 2021 at the company's Leipzig plant. The company is also investing $6.8 billion towards developing electric cars in the next three years.

By 2025, half of the new vehicles from the car maker will be fully electric or hybrids.

“Our aim is to take a pioneering role in technology, and for this reason, we will continue to consistently align the company with the mobility of the future,” said Porsche CEO Oliver Blume.

Porsche's ambitious plans ahead

Porsche has unveiled many big goals at the electrification front. It has already announced retirement of all its diesel line up in 2018. Porsche announced the first fully electric car Taycan last year which is expected to go on sale by the end of 2019.

Porsche’s aggression in electric vehicles will be led by Taycan. A derivative of the electric sedan named as Taycan Cross Turismo will also move into production line very soon.

Although Porsche has not mentioned the possible price of electric Macan, inferences can be drawn from the standard version of the current model that sells below $60,000.

On the technology front, Porsche has not revealed much on the upcoming electric Macan, but the SUV may share the 800-volt technology of Taycan backed by faster-charging capabilities.

The move comes in the midst of most carmakers in Europe switching to the electric vehicle market. Porsche’s parent Volkswagen said in 2018 that it will invest $50 billion for developing electric cars and self-driving technologies.

Mercedes-Benz is also launching an all-electric EQC to be produced on the same facility where its gas-powered GLC SUV is made.

Porsche’s brand name is more popular for the Boxster and Cayman cars. They are hugely famous as mid-engined two-seater sports cars that span four generations. They are 2-door, 2-passenger roadster (Boxster) and a 3-door, 2-passenger fastback hatchback as Cayman.

The fourth generation version came out in 2016. Now the models are sold as Porsche 718 Boxster and Porsche 718 Cayman. Meanwhile, speculation is rife that Porsche is working on a new version of the 718 Boxster with a six-cylinder engine.
