KEY POINTS

  • Los Blancos is passing up chance to sign Willian
  • Willian may settle for one-year deal
  • Willian is staying focused until his contract ends

Willian Borges da Silva remains with Chelsea F.C. until the end of the season. As to what lies ahead after that remains unknown. Several teams have been linked to the 31-year-old football player but it appears that there has been little to no progress as far as negotiations. The latest team to fold is Real Madrid despite strong interest from Zinedine Zidane.

According to the Mirror, Los Blancos has passed up the chance to take in Willian after this season even if it would be free. The problem seems to be the same one the Brazilian has with his current team - a three-year term. Like Chelsea, Real is unwilling to grant him a lengthy tenure. However, they don't appear to mind matching his $150,000-a-week wage demand.

With this development, the teams interested in Willian has grown a bit smaller. Tottenham and Arsenal F.C. are allegedly interested but could follow the same path of Los Blancos. Most teams are financially troubled, a reason why most may not want to commit long-term deals for now. Regardless, it appears the 31-year-old midfielder is pretty much aware of this. He knows that he may have to settle for a temporary deal after this season - possibly a one-year term.

In a previous post, Willian is aware that the COVID-19 pandemic has complicated his situation. The Blues did previously offer him a two-year deal and it will be interesting if that still stands. It is possible that he could be offered a short-term deal similar to Olivier Giroud and Willy Caballero. With plenty of uncertainty in the air, it seems the logical way to go for now while the coronavirus remains a threat.

Regardless, Willian is trying to keep his focus on his current commitment to Chelsea. With the resumption of games, all he wants is to play and do his best to contribute to the cause of the Blues. Chelsea is currently at the fourth spot of the Premier League standings, five points behind Leicester City. Manchester United is the club they have to worry about with the Red Devils only three points behind.

Willian knows that there is a lot of uncertainty after this season once his contract runs out. He could be offered something in the coming weeks, most likely a one-year deal that could buy him time for next summer. If everything settles down, there is a chance he could revisit and seek a longer pact either with Chelsea or some other team.
