KEY POINTS

  • James may be placed on loan if Sancho arrives
  • Multiple teams are interested in James
  • The Sancho deal may happen this summer

Manchester United is bracing for a big signing, targets of which are Jadon Sancho and Jack Grealish. Though the Red Devils have slowed down their pursuit of key players, for now, the grand chase will start once the current season is over. However, that could also result in some players getting displaced.

Odion Ighalo is likely one casualty unless Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has other plans in mind. With no buyout option, the Nigerian is likely to return to Shanghai Shenhua once his contract runs out on Jan. 30. But beyond Ighalo, there are players like Daniel James who could be displaced. United plans to re-sign the 22-year-old after this season. However, there is a possibility he may not be given the proper exposure if Sancho does enter the fold, The Sun reported.

After being acquired from Swansea City for roughly $18.9 million last summer, James has accounted for three goals and six assists before the season was put on hold by the COVID-19 pandemic. He admits that the current season is all about trying to blend in. But James knows that the team will only get better once Marcus Rashford and Paul Pogba are back in harness. Along with that comes the question of how he can fit in Solskjaer's rotation.

The first thing for James is getting a new contract. From there, it all depends on United can pull off a deal with Borussia Dortmund for Sancho. With the Red Devils saving up cash, the possibility of that happening is looming large. But once James signs a new deal and is offered on loan, several Premier League teams are already on standby to take him in.

In a previous post, United claims it is done trying to improve its lineup. They have about $112 million left in cash reserves but executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward has reportedly gotten an additional $175 million loan to add to that. With that amount of money, the Red Devils may have more than enough to go after Sancho who holds a steep $120 million fee. United could also go after Grealish next, further dampening the hopes of James getting proper playing time with new stars coming to Old Trafford.
