Prince Charles thought that Princess Diana will always be in his shadow before they tied the knot and was furious when he realized that she wouldn’t.

In the Netflix documentary “The Royal House of Windsor,” Prince Charles said, “Whomever I choose is going to have a jolly hard job, always in my shadow.” But it didn’t take long for the future king to realize that he couldn’t treat the Princess of Wales like a toy. Princess Diana reportedly had a troubled and complex personality.

Dr. Piers Brandon, a historian, said, “Charles felt he could impose his own personality on her and she would become a kind of female compliment to him. So she was a toy, she was a kind of Barbie doll as far as he was concerned.”

Twelve days after meeting each other, Prince Charles and Princess Diana tied the knot due to the pressures imposed on the former by the royal family. Prince Philip was one of the many people that encouraged Prince Charles to put an end to his bachelor life and marry a decent woman like Princess Diana, and Prince Charles agreed.

However, Gwilym Lee, the documentary’s narrator, claimed that the rushed marriage was what caused its untimely demise.

“Behind Diana’s shy smile lurked a troubled, complex character one Charles and the rest of the Royal Family were ill-prepared to deal with,” Lee said (via Express).

Penny Junor, a royal biographer, added that Princess Diana was damaged.

“She needed to feel loved 100 percent of the time. Charles, on the other hand, was a very needy young man. He felt he was never good enough for his parents, certainly never good enough for his father, and his mother was rather absent because she was Queen. And what he wanted in marriage was a wife who would support him, and in Diana, he didn’t have that wife, so it was a really, really tragic mismatch,” he said.
