Prince Harry used to live in the shadow of his brother, Prince William.

The Duke of Cambridge and Duke of Sussex are embroiled in a rift. However, ever since they were kids there was already favoritism between Prince William and Prince Harry that caused the latter to feel abandoned.

In the 2017 Amazon Prime documentary “The Diana Story,” Princess Diana's former royal butler Paul Burrell opened up about the royal brothers. According to him, “they never saw themselves as royal, not until William was five or six.”

Back then, the whispers in the household began. “I heard Nanny saying to him in the nursery: ‘You'd better have an extra sausage, because you're going to be king one day,’” Burrell shared in the documentary, as per Express.

“That's where the poison begins in a household – where people are whispering in the ears of the young,” Burrell remarked. “Harry must have felt abandoned.”

Burrell said that the ill-feeling didn't last long because Prince Harry got a very big heart. He added that “[Harry] always knew that William was born first and William was next in line, and accepted it.”

Prince Harry even took this to his advantage. There was reportedly a time when he told his older brother that he can do anything because he will not be king.

According to Ken Wharfe, the late Princess of Wales protection officer, the dialogue took place while they were in the car with Princess Diana and the boys' nanny.

“It's alright, I can do anything because I won't be King. You will be, therefore I can do what I want,” Prince Harry reportedly told Prince William.

Wharfe noted that the Duke of Cambridge “gleefully liked” his younger brother's acknowledgment of his future title. There was “an acknowledgment that at least his brother knew that he would be King.”

Although Prince Harry had already accepted his fate, Princess Diana fought hard to give her two sons equal amount of love. In fact, she had confessed to giving more love to Prince Harry because other people preferred Prince William.

“As compensation, Diana poured more love and attention into Harry,” said Richard Kay, a close friend of Princess Diana.

“I have to. Charles and I worked so hard to ensure both boys receive equal amounts of our time and love, but others in the family seem to concentrate on William,” Princess Diana told Kay.
