They’ve been faced with intense scrutiny in recent weeks over seemingly everything they do, and now, some royal experts caution that Meghan Markle and Prince Harry could eventually decide to opt-out of royal life altogether as a result.

According to Express UK, the couple could follow in Princess Diana’s steps and eventually resign from their royal roles due to the intense scrutiny and criticism, and while some may think the Queen could forbid the couple from taking such an action, there actually is nothing that forces them to retain their titles and roles.

“I think it is worth remembering that Diana’s ‘opt-out’ of public life was followed by her famous walk through a minefield in Angola and would undoubtedly have been followed by more amazing charitable activities,” royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams told the publication. “She resigned as a patron of the majority of her charities to concentrate on a few. Her future to help others seemed to have no limit save, alas, for the tragedy of her early death.”

“Harry is devoted to her memory and he and Meghan are highly unlikely to consider the possibility of ceasing to be royals in the conventional sense,” he continued. “There wouldn’t be anything to stop them, the Duchess of Kent, for example, decided to reduce her royal duties, reportedly for health reasons, but it would be bizarre. It is as royals that they have the power to do good on a global scale.”

Because their status as members of the royal family is what gives them so much power to do good, Fitzwilliams admitted that he doesn’t think it is very likely that the couple, who pride themselves on their charitable contributions, would give up the platform they have. However, it doesn’t mean they will continue keeping the UK as their only home base either.

“Their fondness for celebrities has become famous, Meghan was one and loves this life, but it is important to remember the good these links can do such as the Obamas and the Invictus Games and Oprah Winfrey and mental illness,” he said. “It can only be a matter of time before they travel to the US where they will be lionized.”
